Insomnia-types, symptoms, causes and treatment
Insomnia is one of the most common sleeping disorders. It is more often found in older women and among people who smoke or drink alcohol in excessive quantities. Nowadays, sleeping problems are also common among young people. It is not a chronic problem but leads to frustration, fatigue and irritation. Various types of Insomnia Transient insomnia: This type of insomnia lasts for a couple of nights. Chronic insomnia: This is the most common sleeping disorder and it lasts for longer time period say a few weeks. In certain cases, it lasts for several months or perhaps even a year. It more often affects people suffering from medical conditions like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and depression. Apart from the above mentioned types, insomnia also exists in the following forms: Lack of sleep- This is a common problem among youngsters of today. In this medical condition, people usually wake up too early and then find difficulty in sleeping. In young people, it is due to depression. Waking up too early but being unable to fall asleep again- This is more common among people of older age. Insomnia – Common Symptoms If you feel tired, your head starts aching, you feel irritated and also there is lack of concentration. Also, you take longer time to fall asleep and sometimes wake up too early and after that you are unable to sleep again and you take sleep aid pills and alcohol only to fall asleep then you are most probably suffering from insomnia. Main causes of Insomnia Insomnia is basically a sleeping disorder. It is caused due to many reasons but it’s not clear which is the real reason responsible for causing it. Below are listed some commonly found reasons: • Mental state- depression, stress, nervousness, sorrow, worry, distress • Medical conditions- arthritis, heart disease, blood pressure, breathing problem, stomach and anoxia • Drugs used for leisure- nicotine, including caffeine, heroine, cocaine, LSD, amphetamines • Pain- This is the most common reason that leads to discomfort which in turn causes lack of sleep. • Sleep aids and tranquillizers- These sleep aids can actually cause disturbance during sleep. Some other prescribed drugs which include contraceptive pills, slimming pills and stimulants also contribute towards insomnia. How to Overcome Insomnia It is possible for you to cure insomnia on your own without relying on the help of sleep aids. You can help yourself by making few changes in your lifestyle. Change your environment- You need to have a quiet room that is warm and dark and has a comfortable bed so that you can sleep properly. Change your lifestyle- To get better sleep; you will have to make some changes in your lifestyle. You need to cut down all stimulants that include tea, coffee, alcohol and nicotine. Some other remedial measures are: • Exercise regularly • Go to bed early • Think positive • Relax mentally and physically for 1 hour before bedtime These are some of the safety measures that can help a great deal in overcoming insomnia. |
